How to Get Mascara Out of a Fabric Sofa

Getting mascara out of a fabric sofa is very doable at home with the right order of steps. The short version: absorb first with powder, then degrease with washing-up liquid — water alone will simply roll off it. Because a fabric sofa is moisture-sensitive, keeping everything sparing matters as much as the product choice.

   Find the care code on the label under the seat cushions or on the platform: W means water-based cleaning, S means solvent only, WS means either, X means vacuum only. The code — not the stain — decides what liquid may touch this sofa.

   Let a fresh mascara smear dry rather than wiping at it — dried mascara flakes, and gentle scraping with a blunt knife plus vacuuming removes most of the pigment before anything wet gets involved.

   Cover the mark generously with bicarbonate of soda or cornflour and leave it for at least 15 minutes — longer for a big spill. The powder pulls free oil out of the fibre.

   Vacuum the powder away thoroughly.

   Put a few drops of neat washing-up liquid on a barely damp white cloth and dab it into the remaining mark. Washing-up liquid is a degreaser — this is its actual job.

• Many modern covers blend viscose, which water-marks — always test under a cushion first.
