How to Get Foundation Out of a Polyester Carpet

Getting foundation out of a polyester carpet is possible at home but needs patience and honest expectations. The short version: absorb first with powder, then degrease with washing-up liquid — water alone will simply roll off it. Polyester Carpet is forgiving, so the main thing is method and order, not caution.

   Blot straight down with a dry white cloth or the edge of a card to lift surplus foundation — no wiping and no water yet, both of which paint the pigment wider.

   Cover the mark generously with bicarbonate of soda or cornflour and leave it for at least 15 minutes — longer for a big spill. The powder pulls free oil out of the fibre.

   Vacuum the powder away thoroughly.

   Put a few drops of neat washing-up liquid on a barely damp white cloth and dab it into the remaining mark. Washing-up liquid is a degreaser — this is its actual job.

   Blot with a dry cloth, then dab with clean warm (not hot) water and blot again. Repeat the degrease-and-rinse cycle until nothing more transfers.

   If a colour shadow remains once the grease is out, dab it with a little isopropyl alcohol (surgical spirit) on a cotton pad to lift the pigment, then rinse-dab and blot dry.

   Because polyester is oil-loving, run the absorb-and-degrease cycle at least twice even when the mark looks gone — grease is the one thing this fibre grips, and a spot that looks clean while damp can reappear as it dries.

Why this works

Don’t do this on a polyester carpet

• Do not apply water first — oil repels it, and wet fibre stops the absorbent powder working.
• Do not rub fresh foundation; pressure spreads grease sideways through the pile.
• Skip makeup wipes and micellar water on carpet and upholstery — they are formulated for skin, spread the pigment, and leave their own residue in the fibre.
• Polyester is oleophilic: oily marks and dull, greasy traffic lanes are its weak spot. Treat any grease spill promptly and expect more degreasing passes than a watery stain would need.
• No chlorine bleach on polyester: unlike solution-dyed polypropylene, polyester carpet is dyed in the ordinary way, and bleach strips or yellows the colour.

Fresh spill vs dried-in stain

Liquid foundation is pigment suspended in oils and silicones — water beads straight off it, and wet-wiping a fresh drop just paints a bigger patch. Blot the surplus dry, then degrease. Dried foundation loses its oils to the fibre and leaves a pigment shadow for the alcohol stage.

Aged oil on polyester behaves like aged oil on polypropylene — the fibre and the grease are chemically fond of each other. Rework the absorb-and-degrease cycle several times, and accept that a long-set greasy mark may need professional solvent extraction.
