How to Get Coffee Out of a Mattress

Getting coffee out of a mattress is very doable at home with the right order of steps. The short version: cold, damp-not-wet cleaning with thorough blotting, an enzyme stage for the biology, and a genuinely complete dry before the bed is remade. Because a mattress is moisture-sensitive, keeping everything sparing matters as much as the product choice. There are situations here where a professional genuinely is the right call — they are flagged below.

What you’ll need

Recommended: Mild washing-up liquid solution, followed by a one-to-two white vinegar and cool water solution.

Homemade option: One teaspoon of mild washing-up liquid in 500 ml cool water; for the second stage, one part white vinegar to two parts cool water.

Dwell time: 2 to 3 minutes per application.

Step-by-step method

  1. 1

Strip the bedding immediately and blot the coffee hard with dry white cloths — stand weight on them to pull liquid back out of the fillings.

  2. 2

Blot up as much coffee as possible with a dry white cloth or kitchen towel, pressing down firmly. Work from the outside of the stain towards the middle so you do not spread it.

  3. 3

Mix a teaspoon of mild washing-up liquid into 500 ml of cool water. Dampen a clean white cloth with the solution — never pour liquid onto the mattress surface.

  4. 4

Dab the solution onto the stain, then blot dry with a second cloth. Repeat, swapping to clean areas of cloth as the colour transfers.

  5. 5

If a mark remains, switch to one part white vinegar in two parts cool water and repeat the dab-and-blot cycle.

  6. 6

Finish by dabbing with plain cool water to rinse, then blot as dry as you can and leave to air dry.

  7. 7

Press the cleaned area with a stack of dry towels under a weight for ten minutes to wick out moisture.

  8. 8

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the area, leave it several hours, and vacuum — it draws residual moisture and odour.

  9. 9

Stand the mattress on edge in an aired room until COMPLETELY dry — at least 6 to 8 hours, ideally a full day — before any bedding goes back on.

Why this works

Tannins — the plant polyphenols that colour coffee — are water-soluble, which is why cool water and detergent lift most of the stain. The white vinegar stage matters because tannins stay soluble in mildly acid conditions but can brown and fix under alkaline ones, so a mild acid rinse both lifts residue and stops the stain setting. Heat does the opposite: it polymerises the tannins onto the fibre, which is why every step here is cool. On a mattress there is a second constraint the chemistry has to respect: no rinse stage can flush residue away, because flushing means soaking the core. That is why this version leans so hard on blotting, pressing and absorbent powder — mechanical extraction replaces the rinse.

Don’t do this on a mattress

  • Never use hot water — heat fixes tannin stains like coffee into the fibre.
  • Blot, never rub: rubbing spreads the stain and abrades the pile.
  • If the coffee had milk in it, follow up with an enzyme cleaner — the milk protein sours if left.
  • Never pour liquid onto a mattress — the core absorbs it and a damp core grows mould you will sleep over.
  • Always work with a damp cloth, never a wet one, however bad the stain.
  • Do not use bleach or solvent products on a sleeping surface.

Fresh spill vs dried-in stain

Fresh coffee blots out well while still damp. Dried coffee leaves a ring of concentrated tannin at the stain edge that usually needs several passes with a vinegar solution, and milky coffee adds a protein element that can sour if left.

For a dried-in mark, loosen it first: lay a cloth dampened with the vinegar solution over the stain for ten minutes before starting the blotting cycle, and expect several rounds rather than one.

When to call a professional

If the stain has soaked past the surface into the core — the usual sign is the mark reappearing after cleaning — a professional mattress clean with proper extraction is the honest fix. If odour or staining is extensive, price the clean against a new mattress first.

We don’t sell cleaning or take referral fees — when we say “call a pro”, it’s because the chemistry says so. Look for NCCA-registered firms.

Coffee on mattress FAQs

Will coffee come out of a mattress?

In most cases, yes, with the right order of steps. Fresh coffee blots out well while still damp. Dried coffee leaves a ring of concentrated tannin at the stain edge that usually needs several passes with a vinegar solution, and milky coffee adds a protein element that can sour if left.

What is the best cleaner for coffee on a mattress?

Mild washing-up liquid solution, followed by a one-to-two white vinegar and cool water solution. From the cupboard: One teaspoon of mild washing-up liquid in 500 ml cool water; for the second stage, one part white vinegar to two parts cool water.

Can I use excess water — a soaked mattress core grows mould on a mattress?

No. A mattress is a sponge you sleep on: whatever goes in stays in unless it evaporates. The two rules that matter are minimal moisture — always a damp cloth, never a pour — and thorough drying, because a damp core grows mould you will breathe nightly. Enzyme cleaners handle the biological stains that mattresses actually get.

Does heat set coffee?

Yes — this is the mistake that makes coffee permanent. Keep hot water, steam cleaners and hair dryers away until the stain is completely out, and let the area air dry.

How long does a mattress take to dry after treating coffee?

At least 6 to 8 hours upright with airflow, ideally a full day. The slowest-drying surface in this guide: after damp cleaning allow at least 6 to 8 hours with real airflow, ideally a full day, before bedding goes back on.

When should I call a professional for coffee on a mattress?

If the stain has soaked past the surface into the core — the usual sign is the mark reappearing after cleaning — a professional mattress clean with proper extraction is the honest fix. If odour or staining is extensive, price the clean against a new mattress first.
